Lehigh County Community College will
be taking its next major step towards
full accreditation within this year,
Mr. Kenneth MacKay, president of
Union College of New Jersey told this
reporter in an interview last Thursday.
Recognized canidacy, LCCC's consultap~
went on to say, will be the last step
towards its full accreditation.
In this, his second visit to LCCC
as a representative for the Middle
States Association, Dr. MacKay said
accreditation is usually a five-year
procedure, but he added accreditation
will probably come sooner here be-cause,
"I think this college is run
well and we are satisfied with the way
things are getting started."
This college, the distinguished con-sultant
said, has no big problem.
Nothing is lacking in the college's
facilities, courses, teachers, or
materials.
Asked if he saw any deficiencies in
the college, Mr. MacKay answered that
the limitations of the library is one
problem, but the school has grown fast
and under the circumstances it is to
be expected. "One doesn't want to
make that judgement (whether the
school is adequate or not) within
so short a time."
In answer to the next question, Mr.
MacKay explained the meaning of
accredi tation •...He said that in
the United States the tradition of
accreditation is that the accredited
colleges have their own organization,
~nd they try to help new colleges;
and eventually pass judgement on
them. This procedure is historic
and has been long recognized. You
are judged by your peers just Jike
the student government may pass
judgement on student behalf.
The consultant's roll in the
accreditation process is that he
becomes a friend in'cQoperation
with this college and helps it over
the next few years as it prepares
for accreditation. Accreditation
means having the right kind of
library and the facilities that
students should have when they come
to college. (cont. pg. 3, col.l)
"We have been delayed in getting
out the mid-semester grades; this
is only·a slight delay however."
said Dean GebhardstbaueJ.' in an inter-view
on Monday.
The purpose of mid-semester grades
is to enable students to have an idea
as to where they stand and to make
whatever changes which seem needed.
These grades are not ·a part of
your permanent record, merely an in-dication
of your progress. Only final
